Stir up some confidence!

Measuring, mixing, following directions, creating. Lively discussions in an accepting and safe environment that builds skills and nourishes the mind, body, and soul.

Utilizing a special model of instruction, the classes teach cooking techniques, confidence skills, and life improvement principles.

Why Cooking?

Cooking is one of my favorite ways to build confidence in kids. The experience of being able to satisfy a basic need, of creating something from start to finish is PRICELESS.

Music lessons, sports, enrichment and remedial academic "drills" all help kids become proficient at something- but cooking encompasses all modalities.

Cooking...

  • Improves Math and Science skills:  Measuring, fractions, food science, nutrition, chemistry, even chemical reactions - all are built into in the cooking experience.

  • Re-inforces reading and language skills: Reading a recipe, describing a process, taste, flavor, texture.

  • Promotes co-operation:  Being a part of making a meal, cleaning up - everyone has a role and a responsibility.

  • Encourages an adventurous palate: Kids will usually try something that they've had a hand in creating - and sometimes discover they like it!

  • Engages all the senses: Smelling your bread baking in the oven, tasting the sweet and the savory, seeing your creation come together before your very eyes, hearing the sizzle.

  • Promotes creativity: Cooking is creative at its very core.

  • Boosts confidence and self-esteem:  Success breeds self-confidence - every study conducted in the past 50 years has proven that. And, it has a snowball effect - successful people have a high level of self-confidence. A large part of that is believing in yourself. When kids believe they can accomplish a specific goal, it shows up in other areas and they are more likely to try new things, rebound better after failure, and be more persistent in the face of obstacles. This creates the connection between self-confidence and success and it shows up in everyday situations.

  • Is fun!  These classes involve more than just cooking. Beginning, ending, and woven throughout each class are activities that build skills for positive mindset, focus, conflict resolution, overcoming obstacles, and give each student a belief in their abilities and themselves.

I'm Mary Kerwin

and I’ve been a teacher for over 40 years, as well as a mother to four children who pay their own bills. I understand the struggle of getting this parenting thing “right”. It’s hard to juggle all.the.things while making sure your children have everything they need to live happy, well-adjusted lives.

I created this holistic curriculum because I saw a huge gap in what was being taught in school, and what kids actually need to make it in the real world. I believe it’s absolutely imperative for our kids to develop life skills because it will have a direct impact on their confidence and their future.
